31 May 2014

Bugs Fixed

None.

Changed Behaviors

Adds some significant new features, and includes some important changes to behaviour;-

  1. Adds a Summary Report, which is displayed when you click the toolbar/status bar icon. The report is held in memory, and lists all significant Phorm related events that occur during the current session. This report is intended to aid speedy analysis of Phorm activity.
  2. Adds a popup menu to the browser context and toolbar/status bar icon, giving easier access to the preferences dialog, and Summary Report dialog, and allowing the toolbar/status bar icon to be reset.
  3. Allows unwanted alerts & notifications to be better suppressed, without affecting the operation of countermeasures.
  4. Detection of Flash LSO setting has been enhanced. Previously, specific URLs were used to detect suspected LSO activity. Now a more general 'regular expression' is used to detect suspected URL patterns.
  5. Icon status now changes to the warning icon if the opt out countermeasure has been disabled (where previously the warning icon was displayed if cookie setting warnings were disabled).
  6. Enhances the semaphore used to suppress alerts when countermeasure cookies are being set. The change will improve the stability of the code but has no impact on ordinary use.

Known Issues

None.

Dephormation V5.28 ReleaseNotes

In previous versions, the search for links was looking for regexp patterns like "^phorm\.com" (any line beginning phorm.com) or "\.phorm\.com\/" (any line containing .phorm.com/).

Those patterns weren't matching links such as "http://phorm.com" ... so that's been resolved.

Dephormation V5.21 Release Notes
14 April 2013

Bugs Fixed

None.

Changed Behaviors

This release improves the quality/structure of the source code, making it easier to maintain, and facilitating development of new features.

Specifically; the code used to search host names/web pages for references to Phorm domains has been improved to handle the large number of domains registered by Phorm, and provide more useful information in alert messages. On most systems, hopefully, this modification will also improve performance.

Note that a small piece of tell-tale code which reported the current cookies when a link to content from a Phorm site was found has been removed. That feature, used to analyse the BT/Phorm trials, is currently considered obsolete. If you'd like more a more detailed technical explanation, or have any concerns about this feature being removed, please drop me a line.

Known Issues

The new method of text searching used is very fast on Windows systems, possibly less efficient on Linux (based on informal testing here). Where performance is an issue, I'd recommend you turn off the link searching features. Please let me know if you do encounter a performance problem; I'm keen to know if this change is effective.

Dephormation V5.4 ReleaseNotes
8 April 2012

Bugs Fixed

None

Changed Behaviors

The principal purpose of this release is a privacy update, to prevent details of your installation of Dephormation being shared with Mozilla AMO (Add-ons.Mozilla.Org).

I was a bit concerned to learn that;

    Firefox 4 periodically asks AMO [add-ons.mozilla.org] for updated information about all installed add-ons, and uses that information to update the information displayed in the Add-ons Manager panel. This means that you can change basic details about how your add-ons are presented without needing to update your add-on, by simply modifying the information using the AMO developer tools web site." The following pieces of information are automatically updated:

        Name
        Descriptions
        Homepage
        Icons
        Screenshots
        Contributions
        Reviews
        Creator/developers/contributors/translators

    Sometimes you may not want your add-on to automatically update the information listed above from AMO, or you may prefer that Firefox not include your add-on in the list of installed add-ons that it sends to AMO. You can opt out of information updates on a per-add-on basis by simply including the following preference in one of your add-on's default preference files:

      pref("extensions..getAddons.cache.enabled", false);

My add-ons aren't available from add-ons.mozilla.org (and probably never will be)... so there's absolutely no reason why the browser should surrender a list of Dephormation users to AMO.

So, to better protect your privacy, I have updated the Dephormation code to keep Dephormation out of the AMO update procedure.

When configured to rewrite OIX LSOs, the code now detects the required Flash LSO directory/folder automatically.

As described in the Adobe Flash Player Admin Guide Flash LSOs are stored in a #SharedObjects directory/folder, under the users home directory/folder;

    Shared object files are stored in the following locations:

    Windows Vista and Windows 7

    C:\Users\username\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\randomDirectoryName

    Windows 2000 and Windows XP

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\randomDirectoryName

    Macintosh

    /Users/username/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects/randomDirectoryName

    Linux

    GNU-Linux ~/.macromedia#SharedObjects/randomDirectoryName

    Shared objects are stored in a directory with a randomly generated name for security purposes.

The defaults for each of the above operating system are also programmed into Dephormation. Normally no manual configuration is necessary.

In exceptional cases, the 'Flash LSO Path' preference can be manually set to the #SharedObjects folder using the preferences dialog (Tools/Dephormation).

Dephormation will then automatically detect the presence of the random sub-directory/folder created by Flash, and reconfigure itself as necessary.

When Firefox (or other add ons like Better Privacy) purge LSOs, they remove the random sub-directory/folder used to store LSOs. When that happens, Dephormation will temporarily stop rewriting LSOs, and resume when Flash recreates a new random directory.

If you have used earlier versions of Dephormation and set the LSO path manually, you may need to review your 'Flash LSO Path' preference settings. For convenience, you can reset the preferences to defaults... and normally no further manual configuration is necessary.

Known Issues

Phorm are currently hi-jacking browser image requests to perform parasitic tracking. This is not detected, but will be addressed shortly.

Dephormation V4.3 Release Notes
15 November 2011

Bugs Fixed

Fixed LSO & log file permissions under Linux.

Changed Behaviors - None

Known Issues

Note that Flash LSO feature may conflict with other add ons like 'Better Privacy' (which will detect LSOs being generated and/or erase the path to the LSOs when the browser window is closed). In that event, you may find you need to manually reset the LSO path.

The LSO path is not currently being set automatically, and requires manual setting to be effective.

Phorm are currently hi-jacking browser image requests to perform parasitic tracking. This is not detected, but will be addressed shortly.

This version not generally released.

Dephormation V4.0 Release Notes
9 November 2011

Bugs Fixed

General code quality improvements, better efficiency/compatibility.

Changed Behaviors - OIX UID Generation

Previous versions of the add on generated OIX uid cookie values with a fixed piece of text, ensuring they were easy to distinguish from real OIX uids. This version does away with that nicety; all randomised OIX uid cookies are now generated (with each page load) to be visually and perhaps even technically indistinguishable from ordinary 'real' OIX uids.

The random OIX cookie format now mirrors that seen recently in abortive trials in Brazil and Romania. The Webwise cookie format mirrors the legacy of the failed BT trials in the UK (now probably obsolete).

Changed Behaviors - OIX Flash LSO Generation

In this version of the add on, there is a new feature which will allow you to overwrite the Flash Cookie (aka Flash LSO) which is currently being used by Phorm to persist your opt out status, or OIX uid cookie.  Using this feature will prevent Phorm from respawning your OIX UID after you have deleted your cookies.

If you enable this feature, you must manually guide the add on to the folder/directory location where the LSO is being created using the preferences dialog (Tools Menu/Dephormation.../Set Flash LSO Path...).

NB: If you do not set the path accurately, the OIX LSO counter measures will not be effective.

On Windows, the OIX LSO is created in the following folder;

    %APPDATA%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\########\b.oix.net\cs\memo2.swf\oix.sol

(where ######## is a random set of characters)

On Linux, the OIX LSO is created in the following folder;

    /home//.macromedia/Flash_Player/#SharedObjects/########/b.oix.net/cs/memo2.swf/oix.sol

(where ######## is a random set of characters)

In future versions, the add on will set this for you automatically, when the browser starts.

Known Issues

Note that Flash LSO feature may conflict with other add ons like 'Better Privacy' (which will detect LSOs being generated and/or erase the path to the LSOs when the browser window is closed). In that event, you may find you need to manually reset the LSO path.

Phorm are currently hi-jacking browser image requests to perform parasitic tracking. This will be addressed shortly.
